Pumpkin
When a baby is ready to begin solid foods, which is typically around 6 months old, pumpkin may be offered.
How to serve
Give the infant a well-cooked, mashed pumpkin to munch with their hands (or from a pre-loaded spoon).
To promote utensil practice, serve bite-sized slices of well-cooked pumpkin along with a fork.
Nutrition
Contains iron, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sodium, and vitamins A, B, and C. The excellent antioxidant carotenes, which are found in yellow, orange, and red fruits and vegetables, are also abundant in pumpkins.
Good to know
Cook until very soft. Naturally becomes smooth and safe.
The seeds of pumpkin can cause choking, but the cooked pumpkin itself rarely does. Both pumpkin seed and pumpkin allergies are uncommon.
Tip
Look for a BPA-free label when purchasing processed pumpkin storage containers.
