Napa Cabbage
Napa cabbage (Chinese cabbage) is a staple vegetable in Asian cuisine and can be introduced from around 6 months. It has a mild, slightly sweet flavor and becomes very soft when cooked, making it perfect for baby food.
How to serve
Cook until very soft and puree the tender leaf parts. It blends well into congee or mixed vegetable purees. Avoid the thicker white stems for very young babies.
Finely shred and cook in soups or stews until completely tender. Can be added to dumplings or steamed fish dishes.
Serve soft-cooked pieces as a side, or add to stir-fries and noodle soups.
Nutrition
Good source of vitamin C, folate, and vitamin K. Contains potassium and is very low in calories. The high water content helps keep babies hydrated, and the gentle fiber supports digestive health.
Good to know
Napa cabbage is not a common allergen. It is one of the mildest-tasting cabbages, so it rarely causes gas or fussiness in babies compared to other brassicas. It cooks down to a very soft, easy-to-swallow texture.
Tip
The white stem parts take longer to cook than the leafy green parts. For younger babies, use mainly the softer leaf portions. Napa cabbage pairs beautifully with mild fish or tofu in congee.
