Sausage
Sausage can be introduced after 12 months, but should be limited due to high sodium and processing.
How to serve
Offer small pieces of quality sausage occasionally as part of varied diet.
Nutrition
Contains protein and B vitamins. However, high in sodium, fat, and often contains preservatives.
Good to know
Never serve round slices. Cut lengthwise, then into small pieces. Remove casing if tough.
Very processed - not a regular food for a young child. High in salt and often in nitrates, and babies' kidneys handle salt poorly. Sausages, cold cuts and cured or dry sausage can also carry listeria, so serve them heated right through until steaming, never straight from the fridge. Choose lower-salt, nitrate-free options when you do offer them.
Contains: meat and pork
Tip
Look for sausages with minimal ingredients and no nitrates. Better to offer fresh cooked meats instead.
