Tapioca
Tapioca is a starch extracted from the cassava root and can be introduced at 6 months as an energy-dense carbohydrate source. While it is easy on the digestive system, it is quite low in vitamins and minerals.
How to serve
Cook thoroughly in breast milk or water until soft and serve as a smooth, thin pudding.
Serve as a soft, thickened porridge mixed with fruit purees.
Serve as a base for fruit-filled puddings or as an occasional dessert.
Nutrition
Tapioca provides quick-burning energy due to its high carbohydrate content, which is helpful for active, growing babies. However, it lacks significant fiber, protein, or micronutrients on its own. It is best used as a vehicle to add other nutrient-rich ingredients like breast milk, formula, or pureed fruits.
Good to know
Ensure tapioca pearls are cooked until they are completely soft and translucent to avoid any risk of choking. It is very sticky, so always serve it mixed with liquid or other foods to reduce the risk of it clinging to the roof of the mouth.
