Cravings & safety fears

When Do Pregnancy Cravings Start (and Are They Normal)?

Pregnancy cravings often begin in the first trimester, peak in the second, and are completely normal — it's fine to follow them within a balanced diet. They're one of pregnancy's classic (and harmless) quirks.

Cravings are thought to come from hormonal shifts and changes in taste and smell. Common ones include sweet things, salty snacks, citrus, and sometimes unusual combinations.

Often start around weeks 5–9, strongest in the second trimester.
Enjoying cravings in moderation is fine.
Craving non-food items (ice, chalk, dirt) is called pica — mention it to your provider, as it can signal a deficiency.
