How much…? Limits
How Much Weight Should I Gain in Pregnancy?
Recommended pregnancy weight gain depends on your starting BMI — typically about 11–16 kg (25–35 lb) for a healthy-weight single pregnancy. Your provider will give you a personal range.
Weight gain supports your baby, placenta, extra blood, and fluid. Rough general ranges for a single pregnancy:
| Starting BMI | Typical total gain |
|---|---|
| Underweight | ~13–18 kg |
| Healthy weight | ~11–16 kg |
| Overweight | ~7–11 kg |
| Obese | ~5–9 kg |
Gain is usually slow in T1, then steadier through T2 and T3. It's not linear week to week, and that's normal.
