How much…? Limits
How Much Caffeine Can I Have When Pregnant?
Keep caffeine under 200 mg a day during pregnancy — about one to two cups of coffee. You don't have to quit; you just need your daily total.
Caffeine crosses the placenta and your baby can't process it like you do, which is why the 200 mg limit exists.
| Drink | Approx. caffeine |
|---|---|
| Brewed coffee (240 ml) | 95–165 mg |
| Espresso shot | ~63 mg |
| Black tea | 40–70 mg |
| Green tea / matcha | 30–50 mg |
| Cola (330 ml) | 30–40 mg |
The part people miss: caffeine is also in tea, matcha, cola, energy drinks, and chocolate — it's the daily total that counts. Switch a second coffee to decaf, choose smaller sizes, and skip energy drinks (some top 200 mg alone).
Common follow-ups
Is decaf OK?Yes — 2–5 mg per cup.
Stricter in T1?The 200 mg guideline applies throughout; some choose extra caution early.
