When a baby is ready to begin solids, which is often around 6 months old, sweet potato, when cooked till soft, may be offered.

It should be peeled, cooked until soft (at least pierceable with a fork), then chopped into spears, lightly mashed, or pureed. The sweet potato can be be seasoned with breast/human milk or formula, as well as with a small amount of your preferred spice to provide flavor and nutrition.
Sweet potato spears that have been cooked can still be given to children to practice biting and handling larger bits of food. Of course, if doing so makes you feel more at ease, you are welcome to continue giving the infant mashed sweet potatoes to eat with hands or a spoon.
Keep offering cooked sweet potatoes on their own.
