When a baby is ready for solid foods, which is typically around 6 months old, avocados may be offered. Avocados that are ripe are soft and packed with nutrients, making them a fantastic first meal.

6-9 months old

Slice the avocado into finger-width wedges (about 1 inch). Make sure the peel in the center is large enough to prevent getting trapped in your baby's mouth when you peel the two extremities. The avocado's skin makes it less slippery. Peeling the entire wedge and rolling it in fine oats is an additional option. Roll the avocado spears in hemp seeds, shredded, or even finely crushed nuts that you have already introduced to give them more traction if they are slipping out of baby's hands because they are slick (nuts are a common food allergen).

12-24 months

Toddlers are probably getting the hang of using utensils at this age. You can proceed with huge spears of avocado or even small chopped spears.

Goed om te weten

Ripe avocados are not typically a choking hazard. Although uncommon, there have been reports of avocado allergies.

Tip

Once they are taken off the tree, avocados begin to ripen. Put a rock-hard avocado, along with an apple or banana, in a brown paper bag to ripen quickly. On the other hand, placing an already-ripe avocado in the refrigerator will stop the ripening process if you need to keep it for a short while.
