Parmesan (Parmigiano-Reggiano) is an aged Italian hard cheese that can be introduced from around 9 months. It is a cornerstone of Italian cuisine and has been used as a first flavor enhancer for Italian babies for centuries. Its intense umami flavor means a small amount goes a long way in making baby food more appealing.

9-12 months

Finely grate a small amount over pasta, risotto, polenta, or vegetable purees. The cheese melts into warm food and adds flavor without chunks.

12+ months

Continue grating over meals. Can also offer thin shavings or small pieces for self-feeding. Mix into scrambled eggs or sprinkle on steamed vegetables.

Exceptionally rich in calcium and protein. Also provides phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin B12, and zinc. The aging process breaks down proteins into more easily digestible forms, making it gentler on baby's stomach than many other cheeses. Contains virtually no lactose.

Goed om te weten

Parmesan is a dairy product and should be treated as a potential allergen. Introduce carefully and watch for reactions. Because it is aged for at least 12 months, it is naturally very low in lactose, which may make it tolerable for some babies with mild lactose sensitivity. It is high in sodium, so use sparingly.

Tip

A little goes a long way due to the strong flavor and salt content. Start with just a pinch of finely grated parmesan mixed into food. Store the rind and add it to soups and broths while cooking for extra flavor, then remove before serving.
